Women's clothing doesn't have pockets. If they do, you can barely fit half your phone. There is a sexist history behind this. In the Medieval Era, both men and women didn't have pockets. They would carry bags around their waist, like fanny packs. In the late 17th Century, pockets were introduced but only for men. Why? Patriarchy. Since a man works, he needs big pockets for practical purposes. What does a woman do? Why does she need pockets? During this time, women started wearing fanny packs inside their clothing. Then came the French Revolution, which changed the female clothing style. The skirts are tighter and the waists are higher. There's no space to breath So where do you keep your things? The solution was purses and by 1820 there was a waist belt. It had different options to store things and it was worn over the clothing. Finally, in 1981, The Rational Dress Society launched practical clothing for women with pockets. So why do brands today give small or no pockets to women? Because if they can fit everything in their pockets then who will buy handbags and purses?
